A lovely example of a collector's gemstone, this red spinel from Burma exhibits a top ruby-red colour.

Mounted in 18 ct white gold as a simple halo pendant, the spinel of 0.44 ct has a surround of brilliant cut diamonds of 0.10 ct, of grade F, VS.

The pendant comes with an 18 ct white gold trace chain, 18" in length.

Gemmologist's note: Spinel, which is an aluminate of Magnesium (MgAl2O4), produces a wide range of colours, from orange to purple to red, but it is the red colour that is usually more highly valued. It is found often in association with corundum which explains the historical confusion between red spinel and ruby. It's hardness makes it very suitable for use in jewellery, and it has been found in locations such as Burma, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Brazil.
